Why are there program changes on FOX? Sometimes network programming is displaced to make room for various broadcast specials, such as: the Billboard Music Awards, movie premieres, program specials, World Series MLB games, and show encores or finales. And in most incidences, these events air during primetime, 8:00-10:00pm, which means regularly scheduled shows get preempted for the night. 9. How does your station decide what sports games to air and teams to promote? At the beginning of the season, be it football or baseball, we receive a list of three or four possible games to air every week. Then as a station, we choose a game schedule based on the demographics of our particular audience. Our selected games can then be changed by FOX, in which case we submit “game change request forms” that can be approved or denied by the network. Overall, as a local FOX affiliate, we do our best to air games of greatest interest to our audience all season, every season. 10. How do I get a job at KMVU? We announce all job openings in various public outlets. We use the Oregon Department of Employment, Medford Mail Tribune, TVJobs.com, Southern Oregon University e-classifieds, Oregon Association of Broadcasters and local job fairs, to name a few. And you are welcome to contact us and inquire about any employment vacancies we may have at anytime. We always accept resumes and applications here at the station. 11. The V-Chip is built into most television sets and allows you to select what shows are appropriate for your children, even when not in the same room, based on programming TV ratings V-chip guide. 12. Is KMVU airing digital or HDTV programming? Currently we are airing both digital programming over the air on digital channel 26.1 and high definition television. Our HDTV project was completed August 2006. 13. I missed my favorite FOX show. Can I get a copy of it? FOX Broadcasting does not distribute or sell videos of any shows, specials or movies aired on the network. Periodically, it does offer encores of its star programming, but as a local affiliate, we do not always know in lengthy advance when these sessions will air. It’s best to check your local listings, or contact us directly, for any upcoming specials. Also, many programs are being produced for consumer use and are available on DVD in full season increments at local video stores. 14. Can I buy merchandise from my favorite FOX show? Dramas, such as House and Bones, are closed sets and do not allow audiences to view while filming; however, most sitcoms participate in, and even encourage, live production. When planning to visit the Los Angeles area, call Audiences Unlimited at 1 (818) 753-3470 for ticket information or visit www.tvticket.com. 16. Is KMVU FOX 26 directly associated with FOX News? What is High Definition or HD? HD is the highest viewing resolution available to consumers. Its images are sharp and lifelike; they contain none of the artifacts of analog such as ghosting or snow. HD programming is also normally produced in Dolby 5.1 surround sound. Dolby Digital and DTS are six-channel digital surround sound systems and are currently the standard in major motion pictures, music, and digital television. They both use the 5.1 speaker format. The format consists of three speakers across the front and two speakers in the rear. The .1 is a sixth channel that is sent to a subwoofer. At this time, we air HD programming in prime and in high profile events sent to us by FOX. 19. Why a digital signal? The Consumer Electronics industry along with the National Association of Broadcasters and the Federal Communications Commission all got together and wanted to completely change television viewing as we knew it. Some of the goals we’re to provide is an exceptional picture and sound that was easier to receive that also contained a program guide (known as a PSIP menu). The broadcasters also wanted additional revenue “streams”. The term Stream describes a data pipe that can contain one or more program channels sometimes called streams. Example: On its digital channel, each broadcaster sends a 19.39-megabit-per-second (Mbps) stream of digital data. Broadcasters have the ability to use this stream in several different ways. For example: • A broadcaster can send a single program at 19.39 Mbps. • Or a broadcaster can divide the channel into several different streams (perhaps four streams of 4.85 Mbps each). These streams are called sub-channels. For example, if the digital TV channel is channel 26, then 26.1, 26.2 and 26.3 could be three sub-channels on that channel. Each sub-channel can carry a different program. 20. Is my old TV obsolete? What equipment will I need? Is my OLD TV obsolete? What equipment do I need? To fully enjoy digital television it is advised to replace old analog TV sets in order to get the full benefit of digital television. • A Set Top Box can be purchased which looks somewhat like a VCR. It normally has several output formats which work with older and newer TV sets • DTV “Ready” digital televisions are able to display high definition and digital formats, but require a Set Top Box to receive digital television signals • Integrated Digital Television set contains a built in tuner that will allow it to receive digital television signals and display the image on the screen. |
